Since today is a special day, I decided to make our Colorado Pop Culture Trivia quiz about important state dates.  Just to be mean, I'm starting it out bare bones, but if need be, I will add hints later.

So here you go. No Googling, just guessing and being goofy!

What happened on:

1. August 1, 1876?

2. January 25, 1998?

3. August 26, 1964?

4. April 23, 1859?

5. December 11, 1943?

Go hog wild.

Hmm.... (4.00 / 1)
#1 - August 1, 1876: When the Territory of Colorado officially became a state?

#4 - April 23, 1859: When gold was discovered in Colorado?

Off to a good start! (0.00 / 0)
#1 is right! Happy Colorado Day!

#4 happened in part BECAUSE of the gold discovery, but there's a pop culture element. Think media. :)

No. 4 (4.00 / 1)
Has to be the founding of either the Rocky or the Post. One is older, I can never remember which.

That's it! (0.00 / 0)
It was the first issue of the Rocky Mountain News. I think they had a story about John McCain yelling at some prospector kids to get off his lawn....

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

John McCain (4.00 / 1)
complaining that William Larimer was the biggest celebrity in the territory.

1. The other trivia queen got that, right?

2. Oh, come on, this isn't seared into everyone's memory? Broncos win first Super Bowl.

3. YEA! YEAH! WHOOO! AHHHH! OH, PAUL! YEEEEAAAA! RINGO!!!

In the same vein, what happened on June 5, 1983?

4. Pretty sure bco got this too.

5. Don't know ... something to do with internment camps? (gosh, don't we lefties have a jaundiced view of history?)

BONUS:

6. What happened on Sept. 23, 1955?

You're on a roll! (4.00 / 1)
Yes on #2. I had long been a hold-out, but I finally joined the Church of Elway with the rest of my family.

#3. You got it, yeah, yeah, yeah! (Beatles concert at Red Rocks!)

#4 still up for grabs.

Right era for #5, but I am thinking of a happier event. Hint: it was mentioned as a human interest sidebar off and on during the 2004 election cycle.

I will have to think about your other questions.  Is the 1955 one when Eisenhower was hospitalized here for his heart attack?

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

6. Yes! Ike wasn't hospitalized until the next day, but on Sept. 23 he suffered a heart attack while playing golf at Cherry Hills. He recovered at Fitzsimons as the world watched. That week was also the first time Denver fell into the modern media spotlight, which has become quite commonplace lately.

5. Would that be another event at Fitzsimons?

Anna told me Kerry was born here (4.00 / 1)
and the date seems close and 2004 would make sense, is that it?

Yes! (0.00 / 0)
I remember watching one of the news clips where he joked he was even born in the "West Wing".

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

[ Parent ]
The West Wing (0.00 / 0)
He wasn't joking, he was amused at the idea he had been born in Fitzsimons' west wing. Fitzsimons officials sheepishly pointed out the hospital had no such thing, but Kerry persisted making the point for a few more days.

Some more key dates in Colorado history (4.00 / 1)
What happened on these dates?

7. Nov. 29, 1864

8. May 2, 1982

9. Aug. 15, 1993

10. June 13, 1997

I'll give it a go (4.00 / 1)
7. Battle of Glorietta Pass?

9. World Youth Day, where the Pope came to Denver?

Have to ponder the others a bit more.

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

Yes on No. 9 !!That was the day the Pope gave mass at Cherry Creek State Park, culminating a week's worth of World Youth Day events.

No on No. 7, but you've got the right idea.

Dates 7, 8 and 10 are not happy days in Colorado history, though some applaud what happened on 10.

Does it have something to do with TABOR? That's just a wild-ass guess.

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

[ Parent ]
No (0.00 / 0)
When 10. took place, it's safe to say the entire country was paying attention.

[ Parent ]
boy, googling that leads me to (4.00 / 1)
"how soon they forget" - my excuse, I wasn't it Colorado at the time and don't associate the event with Colorado at all - rather a nearby state.

[ Parent ]
Actually three states (0.00 / 0)
figure prominently in No. 10, but the event happened on that date in Colorado.

Hint: the other states are Oklahoma and Indiana.

[ Parent ]
Indiana? The other one a get. (0.00 / 0)

Summit of the Eight?

April 20, 1914? That is a major date in Colorado history. Maybe it is too easy.
