Yes, time for another session of Colorado Pop Culture Trivia!  I had wildlife on my mind today. Not because my personal life is all that wild, I'm sorry to say, but because this week I've been treated to catching views of teeny toads (and one big one tonight!) and a pair of young foxes. More about the foxes later.

As always, funny answers are just as welcome as correct ones. No Googling Allowed.  Feel free to share cool info in your answers--I love that!

1. The largest youth horse club in the world and the location of their headquarters. (And be nice, I'm an alumnus!)

2. They used to be the Colorado Aggies.  Who are they now? (Be nice, a former CO governor is an alumnus!)

3. Where would you find the following streets: Brontosaurus Boulevard, Stegosaurus Freeway, Triceratops Terrace, Brachiosaurus Bypass, and Diplodicus Drive?

4. What animal became the state reptile this year? For extra credit, name the state animal, state bird, and/or state fish.

5. What bird is honored with a celebration every year in Fruita?

Okay, about that fox. I was driving the last mile home and an animal dashed across the road in front of me. I slowed down to check it out and saw it was a young fox holding a dead bird (?) in its mouth. There was another interested party checking out the dinner too, a second fox.  Since its sibling didn't want to share, it turned around and started heading up the edge of the cornfield.  Amazingly, me driving along just a few yards away didn't bother it a bit.  You can't see much because of the dim light, but what it was doing was BROWSING, looking down each row between the cornstalks, just like it was shopping at a supermarket!

I will tell you up front, the video quality is poor, because the sun was down and I only had my old junky camera (the one I don't mind carrying in my purse because it's no great loss if something happens to it). The only reason I am posting it at all is because I am very proud that I have figured out how to overlay a sound clip when editing a video!

I guess I could give extra credit for IDing the singer and song....

Where the Columbine Grow (4.00 / 2)
1. The Westernaires. Isn't their headquarters at the Jeffco Fairgrounds?

2. The Rams -- CSU was originally an agricultural land grant college. One of my uncles taught at Texas A&M (which are still the Aggies) and another at CSU, so this was a constant summer fishing trip topic of discussion

3. Only in Dinosaur!

4. Dick Wadhams is the official state reptile. (Actually I don't know that one, some salamander or something?) The state animal is the bighorn sheep, state bird is the lark bunting ... I think the state fish is the rainbow trout but not sure. We spent something like an entire semester on this topic in third grade, plus Alferd Packer.

5. Fruita ... no idea here. The Banana Sparrow? The Guava Grackle? The Blackberry Blackbird?

Extra: The Fox Went Out, and I'm pretty sure that's Pete Seeger singing

Wow, thanks to you I have almost nothing to do all day (0.00 / 0)
Trivia wise, that is. Sigh.

1. Yes, the Westernaires HQ is at the JeffCo Fairgrounds. I spent many a blissful, horsy hour there in the 60s.

2. Yep! and yep to #3 as well.

4. Bonus funny answer point.  In fact, take two. Although I think DickW*d probably would be the state amphibian, as he is slimy and reptiles usually aren't.

The animal and bird are right, the fish is close but a slightly different variety of trout.

5. Heh, good bird suggestions!

Extra: Song is right, slightly different variety of Pete.

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

Reptile, amphibian ... (4.00 / 1)
Dick Wad is many things to many people ... he's just not a particularly effective campaign manager or state party chairman lately.

4. Something more parochial for the fish? The Rocky Mountain Speckled Trout, or something to that effect? And the Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick must be the State Something. Still don't know the reptile. Was that one of those third-grade class projects?

Extra: Roger Whittaker? Pete for the masses, without the Communism?

My neighborhood, near Casa Bonita, if that isn't an entire trivia quiz in itself, is a bustling ecosystem ever since Wal*Mart did some wetlands amelioration a few years ago. In the last week, in my front yard I've seen two red foxes, a gray fox, a skunk, a real skinny coyote, and a family of raccoons. No bighorn sheep or lark buntings, however.

[ Parent ]
I agree Casa Bonita could be a whole trivia quiz all by itself! (0.00 / 0)
Trout hint: It was once on the endangered species list. So it got the pity vote for state fish, over the more politically progressive Rainbow.

Nope, not Roger. An actual Pete(r).

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

[ Parent ]
How many cliff divers have been killed while diving at Casa Bonita? (0.00 / 0)
Last guess here: Peter Yarrow.

Not the Jesse Jackson Rainbow Coalition Trout, which has certainly been on the endangered list from time to time in Colorado.

I wish I'd had my camera earlier today, saw the state reptile, Dick Wadhams, sunning himself on a rock as temps hit 100 degrees. What a Colorado scene.

[ Parent ]
Yes, that's him! Peter Yarrow of Paul & Mary (0.00 / 0)
I hope when you saw DW, he hadn't shed his skin yet. Gross!!

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

It was peeling (0.00 / 0)
but he had this quiet, calm smile on his face. Every now and then, his tongue would dart out and snatch an insect. It's a mystery what the state GOP sees in him.

We could ask (4.00 / 1)
our neighbor re dead cliff divers -- the young guy who just moved into the downstairs apartment next door is a cliff diver at CB (also juggles fire in his free time.  Oy!  Do I need that as an example for a 15 y/o son?)

McCain/Palin: Because all cats are gray in the dark

The Fruita bird is (4.00 / 2)
IIRC, Mike the Headless Chicken (although technically it would be Mike the Headless Rooster, wouldn't it?)

McCain/Palin: Because all cats are gray in the dark

Hehe (4.00 / 1)
I think a rooster is a chicken. But it would be funny if it were Mike the Headless Hen. :-)

[ Parent ]
What great festivals we have (5.00 / 2)
between Mike the Headless Chicken and Frozen Dead Guy Days, we have some fun events! Other states just pay homage to their various agricultural products, but not Colorado!

Wasn't there a town (4.00 / 1)
in Colorado that had a festival for a bridge they named "Bob"?  Or was it a different name?  I tried googling in, but couldn't find it -- too many references for people named Bob Bridge, or bridges named for Bob Somethingorother.

How about a trivia quiz on Colorado bridges? (4.00 / 1)
I don't know about the Bridge named Bob, but the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge in Steamboat Springs always makes me smile.

I'm always looking for ideas! (0.00 / 0)
If you want to be a guest CPC trivia poster some time, just let me know. You can write it up on your own, or just give me some facts and let me go at it, your choice.

Seriously, people, we have a motherlode of brainiacs here at SS. Let's spread the wealth of knowledge of trivial facts around!

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

Wouldn't you know? (0.00 / 0)
I thought about mentioning Bob the Bridge in my Road Trip Trivia quiz, but I didn't think anyone would know that one. Silly me!

Luckily I remembered the name of the town, Avon, which made it easier to Google.  Here's part of the Wikipedia entry:

A local four-lane highway spans the Eagle River on a 150-foot bridge, constructed in 1992, that was officially christened "Bob" as the result of a local contest to choose a name for it. Avon received national attention for the humorous name and made "Bob the Bridge" the theme for several local festivals.

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

[ Parent ]
Correct! (4.00 / 1)
Perhaps he is Mike the Headless Chicken so as to be gender neutral?

Take heart! http://codeneonblue.net

I always enjoy the trivia (4.00 / 2)
even when I don't know the answers.  Good set of questions, Susan!

Your fox story reminded me of a critter I saw on the 5th of July.  My s/o and I had watched the Glendale fireworks show, then relaxed at Applebee's on Colo. Blvd. while everybody fought their way out.  On the walk back to our ride, a largish animal ran across Virginia Ave.  It was larger than other foxes I've seen in Denver and was colored more like a coyote - gray I think.  I'm not quite sure what it was.  It was strolling along at quite a clip, headed back toward Cherry Creek.  Definitely didn't have time to catch it with a camera.

It probably WAS a coyote! (4.50 / 2)
Was he carrying any ACME products? Chasing a speeding bird? That would nail down the ID.

Seriously, if you want to see a lot of excellent coyote pics for comparison, go here:
http://dailycoyote.blogspot.com/

This lady found an orphaned coyote pup and now lives with him and a couple other creatures in very rural Wyoming. She posts a new pic, usually of him, almost every day. I think my current favorite is Why Ranchers Hate Coyotes.
